VANOCE VE VELKE BRITANII
Všechen spěch a hon začíná již před Vánocemi a obvykle končí těsně před jejich začátkem. Balení dárků, rozesílání vánočních přání, dobová výzdoba, či strojení stromku nenechá jediného člena rodiny v klidu.
Anglický Ježíšek se jmenuje Father Christmas (Otec Vánoc). Nosí dlouhý oblek červené nebo zelené barvy. O Štědrý večer chodí dům od domu a rozdává dárky. Děti věší punčochy na krb a nebo prázdné povlak od polštářů na rohy postelí. Ráno se probouzejí a doufají, že právě jim tam zanechal spoustu dárků.
Děti píšou Otci Vánoc dopisy, které vhodí do krbu. Jedině tak mohou vzlétnout a dostat se až do Severního Pólu, kde jejich přání bude vyslyšeno. Pokud však dopis shoří, musí se napsat znovu.
Počátky oslavy Vánoc se ve VB datují k roku 596 n. l, kdy se svatý Augustin spolu s početnou skupinou mnichů vylodil na březích Anglie, aby přivedli Anglosasy ke křesťanské víře.
Ráno, 25.prosince, rodina společně rozbaluje dárky a poté připravují slavnostní hostinu. Ta bývá podávána přesně v poledne. Stůl, na němž se obědvá, se doslova blýská vším zřídkakdy používaným porcelánem a křišťálovým sklem. Oběd začíná přípitkem a poté symbolickým rozlomením tzv. christmas crackers (jedná se o papírové tuby, v nichž se ukrývá drobný dárek). Oběd se skládá z pečeného krocana s kaštanovou nádivkou se zeleninou a omáčkou. Nabídka dezertů je mnohem pestřejší: švestkový puding polévaný Brandy, sladké koláče nadívané kandovaným ovocem aj.
Poté se všichni členové rodiny odeberou do obývacího pokoje a sledují tradiční vánoční projev královny Alžběty II.
26. prosince Briti slaví tzv. Boxing day (není zde žádná spojitost s boxem). Existuje mnoho interpretací, proč se tento den takto jmenuje. Pravděpodobně se jedná o odkaz z minulosti, kdy se právě v toto datum otevíraly kasičky z kostelů a jejich obsah byl rozdělen mezi chudé.
